Ok. I asked my AP Biology teacher a month and a half ago to write me a college recommendation letter for the four private colleges I’m applying to (Columbia, Cornell, Stanford, Johns Hopkins). He agreed. Over the course of a month, I’ve been checking up on my application status at Columbia’s online application and saw that my teacher still hadn’t submitted the letter yet. The day before winter break, I went to remind him.

I checked again every day since the beginning of winter break, and the letter still hasn’t been submitted. There should be NO waiting period between the time he submitted the letter to the time it’s registered in my status because all of the recommendations for Columbia are submitted online.

My question: Is there a chance that, when I get back from winter break and have a talk with my teacher, that his recommendation letter will still be accepted? Or am I royally screwed in my application because of one letter?

I am a very ambitious person (looking at Cornell. Johns Hopkins, UCLA, Tulane)…

Honors Chemistry (I did Honors Biology last year)
Honors Algebra II
Honors English II
Honors American Studies
Advanced Spanish 4
Graphic Computer Applications
Gym/Health
Study Hall

I’ll also be volunteering at Princeton Medical Center, plus be taking courses year-round from CTY at Johns Hopkins (online study). I’ll also be doing Science Bowl and NHD. Thank You!
And also, I am looking to be a Political Science, History, or Astronomy major, but eventually move on to medical or law school.

How does AP Biology self-study work?

Recently, I’ve dropped AP Biology for an Independent Study with my Anatomy teacher. I already have 2 other APs (Calc I and US History), but my mom insists that I try to self-study for the AP Bio test. If I do that, I get to write the AP exam, but will I get credits for the course? Or will my college application just say that I have taken 3 APs this year? (Credits for graduation is not a problem as I already have an excess of credits). Will a college know if I self-studied? Will it look like an example of academic pursuit, or will a college not like it?

P.S. What does a college (Like UChicago, Cornell, Duke, UMich, etc…) think about Independent Study? I am researching "The Psychology behind Love and Attraction", and have to write numerous papers on it and present it to several classes at the end of the year. I am also doing this with a qualified teacher (She went to princeton, if that counts for anything). Will this look good on a college application or not?? My other classes are: AP Calc AB, AP USH, French 4 Honors, Shakespeare HNS, and Anatomy.

P.P.S. What about the lab requirements.
P.P.P.S. Should I self-study through textbooks like Cliff’s/barron or should I take an online course at Johns Hopkins?

I’m a senior with a GPA hovering around 3.73, unweighted. I am deeply involved in many extracurriculars (with many leadership positions), and I have excellent test scores and sterling letters of rec., but my GPA doesn’t make me feel good about colleges like UPenn and Cornell.

I’m thinking of taking AP Biology over the summer at Keystone Online High School, but it’s costly- just under 0. But since it’s a full year course, I’m pretty sure that’s not one, but two, additional A’s. Should I do this? Will it give me extra leverage in the college admissions offices?

To clarify, my main goal is to raise my GPA, not get college credit. I understand that taking the AP exam might enable me to earn to college credit, but it won’t alter my transcript if I don’t take the class.

I'm looking for the best online high school. I have plans to go to Cornell (an Ivey League school) to get a degree in vet medicine, so the school I go to needs to have good Science and Math classes. Plus it has to be highly qualified, so it wouldn't be looked down upon on my college application. I was looking into Brigham Young University or University of Missouri. They both have online high school courses. Which one is better? Are there any better online high schools?
