Is an MBA the right graduate degree for me?
In 2006, I graduated with my Bachelor’s of Art in Public Relations. Since 2007, I have been working for a small advertising agency handling Public Relations, Specialty Promotions, Account Executive – you name it I handle it. I love my job, but a Master’s degree is something I’ve always wanted.
Currently, I’m looking at obtaining my MBA through a school which offers both online and Saturday classes. With everything going on in the economy, I can’t afford to quit my job to enter Graduate School, so this online program works out great.
Ultimately, I’d like to teach – and not necessarily a course which most typical MBA students teach, i.e. economics, etc. I know that some MBAs teach marketing courses, which I can teach because I handle marketing in my current job. I’d really like to teach at maybe a community college level and teach courses such as Speech and maybe English.
Is the MBA the right choice for me?

MBAs are very much about the numbers and management side of business, and I think you might have a bit of trouble convincing community colleges to let you teach the kind of courses you want based on the courses you’ll have to take for your degree. Look into IMC (integrated marketing communications) programs and general MAs in communications as a possible alternative; they might be a better fit for you.
MBAs are a dime a dozen. It’s not likely (though possible) you will be hired to teach at a Community College, because there are many PhDs and targeted Master’s holders competing for the same job.
If you do get a part-time MBA, make sure it is AACSB-accredited.
Community colleges hire MBAs to teach business courses. If you want to teach English and speech, you may be better off with another degree. however, the MBA is still the most poplar graduate degree and there is always a demand for quality MBAs, although it varies with the state of the economy.
Consult the Official MBA Guide. It’s a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status, tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, and much more. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. It’s the best service available at http://officialmbaguide.org.
An MBA seems like it would be a great choice for you. If you really want one then you should do it. I went to Adelphi and it helped me out a lot in the long run. Check out http://www.adelphi.edu/amMBA for alot more information.
Whether you want to teach or continue with your job is completely your choice. However, if you want to teach English, I guess you’ll have to first do your MA and then take the NET exams. However, an MBA degree along with your experience will help you to get a better job profile and salary. My personal opinion is that an MBA is a better bet than English, but as I’ve said, it’s entirely your call. In case you want to opt for an part time/online MBA program, I’d suggest you consider only the top institutes. Instead of spending your money and time in doing it from some unknown private institute, I’d advice you check out the ones that has government accreditation (In case you do not make the cut for top institutes). You may want go through http://www.upes.ac.in and check out their MBA programs. That is a good place to do your MBA from. All other details and information are available in the website. Good Luck.
