How Long Would It Take to Get a Biology Degree on Active Duty?
Would it take like 8 years or something? I already have a B.A. in Political Science but want to go back to school and get a degree in Biology. I wouldn't need to take anything like English 101 – it would just be the Biology courses and some of the required Mathematics courses.
With this in mind how long do you think we're talking here? All total I'm talking about 20 different classes (15 Bio courses, and then about 5 Math courses). How long would this take? Keep in mind I'm talking about in-class courses, not online courses?
I'm in the infantry (11X) by the way. I'm not trying to get the degree because I'm trying to make money, but because I think this might be the path I want to take with my life. Maybe who knows.
Thanks everyone.

Maybe 4 or 5 years or longer depending on a lot of things. Your military duty will always come first and you have to work around that. If you can work nights in your field that would be better. You could probably manage 2 classes a semester depending on when you're working. The problem with biology is most classes have a lab with them don't they? So that's extra time besides the regular classes. It also depends on where you're stationed. Is there a college close by that offers a biology program.
Whatever you decide, good luck.
It's going to take a long time because the 300 and 400 level course work is the hardest to do on active duty. Add to this the pace of deployments. Eight years might be a good estimate.
Well if you don't die over there, and Obama or McCain is elected president, then you'll prolly spend at least the next 4 years on active duty.

You seem earnest. But I think you are refusing to face facts. Nobody has a job for somebody with a BS degree in Evolutionary Biology. Nobody publishes the research of anyone with only a BS degree in any kind of Biology. There is no such "path in life" unless you are independently wealthy and don't need to work for a living.
Upper class Biology classes and labs are scheduled during daytime hours only. Can you get a steady night shift active duty military schedule for 3-5 years? I doubt it.
Think about a career in nursing (lots of colleges have night shift courses for those with other BA degrees) or Physician's Assistant programs.
Evolutionary Biology is for PhD candidates only who intend to teach at the college level. Nothing else.
Good Luck.
The problem with biology is the amount of required cognates you need to take. In order to get the degree you have to take all of the biology courses plus physics, general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, calculus, and usually a statistics course. In my major I am required to take only 3 lab courses to get the B.S. degree, but when choosing electives it will probably be 4. However, physics and both chemistry's will have labs; in your case it sounds like you might have a hard time making it to all of these. I think it would be best for you to take your introductory biology lecture courses while you are still on active duty. Then when you are done you can start with chemistry. In my school biochemistry is required before one can enter into upper level biology courses, and one has to make it through organic chemistry before they can take biochemistry.
It would take quite awhile.
Anytime you try for a specific degree while on active duty, besides business, international relations.
For a biology degree, you would actually have to take the class's at a university.
You would have to take weekly labs.
Since at best, you would be able to only take two class's a week.
It would take 4 or 5 years to get the class's you need.
Also being infantry, is not gonna help.
Since you don't have set duty hours for a long enough time, to complete a semester.
