Tips For Choosing Online Universities

Everybody has their own opinions about online education, and quite frankly some of that information can be a little one sided. Here, I’m going to outline 10 tips you can use when searching for an accredited university online.

1,) Do not register for a course if it is not from an accredited institution. This will hurt your chances of transferring to other colleges, if the online institution is not credible.

2.) Make sure that the accrediting agency is legitimate. There are many degree mills out there and many of them also run so-called accreditation agencies. To be fully legitimate, a business entity must be government approved. Thus, one of the best ways to trust an accreditation agency is to find out if it’s been approved by the United States Department of Education.

3.) Make sure that the degree course you are considering fits in your educational and career long range plans. For instance, if you are thinking about an associate degree program, and you later want to pursue a bachelor’s degree, find out if your coursework will allow the transfer to another accredited university. Whether it be an online or on site college that accepts credits.

4.) Do some research on the class size of the institution you are considering. Class size is just as important as it is to a traditional classroom.

5.) Find out what the faculties qualifications are. What degrees they hold and from what institutions? In what fields are their experiences? How long have they been teaching and how long have they been teaching online classes? Look out for professors that hold degrees from the colleges that they themselves are teaching at. This may lead to some problems.

6.) Always consider the level of support offered to students? How easy does the institution of higher learning make it for students to contact their instructors or tutors in case they need help? Choose not only an accredited university online, but also an institution that offers support that meets with your needs and expectations.

7.) Don’t let anyone pressure you into beginning a program if you do not feel you have the time and commitment. It’s always best to follow it thoroughly with the time and effort that is required to achieve your greatest success. Sign up only when you feel you are ready.

8.) Determine if the certification can be completed entirely online or if some on site project work or residency periods will be required.

9.) Research about financial aid options that the institution has available. This could be loans, scholarships or tuition installment plans that can make it much more affordable.

10.) Probably the most important feature, online degree options are not as limited as they were 10-15 years ago, so do not settle for anything less. Request information from 5 or 6 of your top colleges and go for the one that appears to offer the course you want the most. These ten tips above will guide you in your college selection process. You are more than likely to get an accredited university online that fits both your needs and expectations.

Although there are many online universities available, choosing the best online university that offers your preference online degree program can be a challenge. You may know what type of program you are looking for, but narrowing your list to the programs that contains the courses which meeting your requirements may be difficult. Here are five considerations which can help you compare online universities based on a few important factors.

1. Compare Online Universities Accreditation

I believe you have seen the word "accreditation" mentioned in many online education guides and articles. It’s the most important factor to consider when comparing online universities. If you earn a degree from an online university with regional accreditation, your degree will be accepted widely in the job market, and it helps you to have easier time finding jobs after graduation. You may want to continue to a higher education in the future, which you most probably will use your degree to apply for graduate programs, and a degree from an accredited online university will enable you to transfer your credit easier because these online degrees are accepted by most schools.

2. Compare Online Universities Residency Requirements

Not all online degree programs are offered 100% online, some universities requires their online students to attend a certain hours of physical classes on campus; others may require once a week for group meeting among students on group course work discussion, or perform their lab work at school. Hence, when comparing online universities, you need to consider the residency requirements that best fit your schedule especially if you are a working individual or traveling to campus is a concern to you.

3. Compare Online Study Schedules

Although one of the key features of online education program is "flexible schedule", but not all online universities allow you a full flexibility to study at your own pace, you may need to meet strict deadlines, or you are required to logon to the online classes at a fixed time to attend real-time learning sessions. If you are a working individual who have un-fixed working hours or a frequent traveler for job assignment, then you may prioritize on the online universities that allow you to study fully at your own pace.

4. Compare How Online Universities Carry Out Examination

There are online universities allow students to complete course exams entirely online, with open-book tests, while others may require their students to attend the exams at a proctored testing center. If you prefer to take open-book examination, then online universities that need you to attend closed-book tests might not be the best option for you.

5. Compare Online Universities Admission Requirements

Each online university has it own admission requirements; some schools have a very lengthy application process that require you to attend interviews, writing an essay or get a recommendation letter for your admission application, while others may have simple and easy admission process. When comparing these online universities, you need to ensure you are able to meet the admission requirements before you submit your application.

How Does An Online University Course Work?
 by: Hal McIver 7eb

Any online university course has a few prerequisites like a computer, a phone connection, and an Internet Service Provider. With these basics in place, any student anywhere in the world can enroll for the programs being offered by an online university.

After enrolling you will typically be given easy-to-use Internet access software to facilitate quick and smooth retrieval of lectures, questions, and assignments. Since there are no time schedules and frames, the instruction material can be downloaded anytime and reviewed offline at your convenience.

Online research libraries and services are available from the university to cater to the students’ research requirements. The programs are designed to fit in interaction with other students and professionals from the field. This helps the students enrich their assignments before they discuss it in an academic environment with their instructors. Instructors also guide the students through the courses to avoid any learning hitches.

Although this multi-interaction offline scenario enriches the student’s learning experience, the spontaneous classroom scenario is missing in an online course. For some students, the class interaction could be more invigorating than learning online.

However, an online program offers you almost unlimited flexibility. Each course is completed over five to six weeks and students can take breaks between courses. Since the interaction is asynchronous, as in email messages, there are no schedules or fixed timings for classes either. A student doesn’t have to rush from work to meet a class time. Whereas this could also serve as a demotivator for certain students who perform better under strict schedules and timetables, it is advantageous for people with hectic work environments, and for people who can exert self-discipline in setting an effective timetable.
